What Are Sinkholes and What Causes Them?
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) defines a sinkhole as “a depression in the ground that has no natural external surface drainage.” These phenomena occur in areas where the ground surface is composed of limestone and other porous rocks.
When water seeps through soil, it absorbs carbon dioxide and reacts with decaying vegetation. As a result, the water becomes slightly acidic. As it moves underground, the water creates crevices in the limestone. Over time, the ground becomes less stable and more prone to collapse. Sinkholes form when the surface land sinks into the vacant cavities below.
