What Are Sinkholes and What Causes Them?
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) defines a sinkhole as “a depression in the ground that has no natural external surface drainage.” These phenomena occur in areas where the ground surface is composed of limestone and other porous rocks.
When water seeps through soil, it absorbs carbon dioxide and reacts with decaying vegetation. As a result, the water becomes slightly acidic. As it moves underground, the water creates crevices in the limestone. Over time, the ground becomes less stable and more prone to collapse. Sinkholes form when the surface land sinks into the vacant cavities below.
Although sinkholes often occur naturally, they can also be the result of human activity. For example:
- Pumping groundwater for construction projects
- Creating artificial lakes and ponds
- Withdrawing too much groundwater
- Channeling drainage into concentrated areas
Sinkholes are a fairly common occurrence in Florida, so much so that one publication declared it an epidemic.
What Are the Signs of Sinkholes?
It’s not always possible to know when disaster is about to strike, but there are some signs that indicate sinkhole damage may occur:
- Cracks in interior and exterior walls
- Cracks in the ground outside or the driveway
- Depressions in the ground
- Slanting or uneven property
- Pooling of water in the yard
- Tilting or falling trees and fences
