Common Spinal Injuries

According to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), 250,000-450,000 individuals in the United States could be living with a spinal cord injury. Damage or complete severance of the spinal cord can cause permanent loss of function to the body parts below the injury. Unfortunately, current medical therapies are limited in what they can do for patients with severe spinal cord injuries.

Spinal injuries can occur in the following regions:

  • The neck area (cervical spine)
  • The thoracic spine (upper back)
  • The lumbar spine (lower back)
  • The sacral area (the lowest part of the spine above the tailbone)

Severe spinal cord injuries are generally classified as catastrophic, as patients may lose all motion and sensation from the location of the injury below. There are two forms of paralysis: tetraplegia (or quadriplegia) and paraplegia. Tetraplegia refers to paralysis of most of the body from the neck area down, while paraplegia describes paralysis of some or all of the trunk, the pelvic area, and the legs.

The Difference Between Incomplete and Complete Spinal Cord Injury

Both incomplete and complete spinal injuries can cause a loss of muscle function and sensation in the affected body parts. However, complete injuries result in a total loss of motor function and sensation below the site of the spinal cord damage, with both sides of the body generally affected.

On the other hand, individuals with an incomplete spinal cord injury may retain some muscle movement and sensation. They may also have more functioning on one body side and may be able to move one leg or arm more than the other. Individuals with an incomplete injury also have a higher chance of recovering some function than those with a complete injury.

Symptoms of Spinal Cord Injuries

Victims may not realize how bad their injuries are immediately after a car collision or fall. However, seeing a doctor immediately after an accident can be essential for detecting an undiscovered or delayed-onset spinal injury. Symptoms pointing to a spinal injury include:

  • Loss of feeling in fingers, hands, toes, or feet
  • Breathlessness
  • Muscle weakness
  • Tingling and numbness
  • Loss of bladder and bowel control
  • Exaggerated reflexes
  • Severe back or neck pain
  • A feeling of pressure in the back, neck, or head
  • Inability to feel hot or cold

A prompt medical diagnosis and treatment can be essential for spinal cord injuries. Moreover, if you want to recover compensation from the individual or business that caused your accident and injury, you require a comprehensive medical report as evidence of your injuries.
