What Types of Social Security Disability Benefits Are Available?
There are essentially two types of Social Security disability benefits:
- Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI); and
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
SSDI
SSDI is awarded to individuals who have accumulated enough work credits to qualify and are still insured when applying for benefits. To qualify for SSDI, there are basically two requirements:
- You must be disabled - The Social Security Administration (SSA) has its own definition of what it means to be disabled. To be considered disabled under the SSA's definition, you must have a severe medical impairment that prevents you from doing:
- The work that you used to do; and
- Any other type of work.
This impairment can be physical, mental, or both.
- You must have a qualifying work history - You must have accumulated 20 or more "quarters of coverage" (QCs) in the previous 10 years and still be fully insured.
SSI
The SSA awards SSI benefits to individuals who have not accumulated enough work credits to qualify for SSDI and have limited financial means. To qualify for SSI benefits, you must:
- Be a U.S. citizen, who is:
- 65 and older;
- An adult who is blind or disabled; or
- A child who is blind or disabled.
- Demonstrate a financial need - this generally means that you have:
- Less than $2000 in assets if single; or
- Less than $3000 in assets if married; and
- Little household income.
Why Might My Social Security Disability Claim Be Denied?
In most cases, your initial application for benefits will be denied. This is partly because applicants often fail to provide crucial details, only adding to the delays that you may experience in the claims process.
It is not enough to have your doctor say that you are unable to work. You must also have supporting evidence that you suffer from a condition that prevents you from working and qualifies you to receive benefits. Our experienced Social Security disability attorneys can ensure that you have all the evidence you need to succeed in your claim from the very beginning.
