J.M Co. Smucker Recalls Jif Peanut Butter Due to Salmonella Contamination

On Friday, May 20, 2022, J.M. Smucker Co., the parent company for the widely known peanut butter brand Jif, issued a voluntary recall on multiple Jif peanut butter products due to a recent outbreak of salmonella linked to a manufacturing facility in Lexington, KY. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), along with other local partners, are currently investigating the outbreak spanning over 12 states. According to data provided by the CDC, currently, 14 people have reported illnesses, two of which have resulted in hospitalizations.

What Is Salmonella?

According to the CDC, roughly 1.35 million people are infected by salmonella poisoning every year, with 420 dying as a result. So, what exactly is salmonella, and how does it harm us? Salmonella is a bacteria typically found in animal and human feces. When consumed, the bacteria causes an illness known as salmonellosis, an infection that affects the intestinal tract.

Symptoms of salmonellosis include but are not limited to:

  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Blood in the stool
  • Abdominal cramps

These symptoms appear anywhere from 12 to 72 hours after contact and can last a few days to a week. Most infected people can recover within four to seven days and do not need treatment. However, more severe or even life-threatening cases can occur. If you believe you or a loved one consumed a jar of the recalled Jif peanut butter and have been experiencing symptoms of salmonella infection, immediately contact your healthcare provider. Which Jif Peanut Butter Products Are Being Recalled?

According to the J. M. Smuckers Co, the peanut butter recalled has been distributed in retail stores and other outlets throughout the country. Those products included in the recall are the Jif creamy, natural, and crunchy varieties, along with many others. In order to check if your jar of Jif peanut butter has been recalled, you'll need to look for the lot numbers printed underneath the "Best if Used By" date on the jar label. The principal identifiers for those recalled peanut butter products are labeled with the lot code numbers between 1274425 – 2140425. The codes will also include the number "425" as the ending three digits. It is essential to note that the digits of "425" in that position indicate that it was processed in the Lexington facility. All of the identifiers mentioned before are typically printed on the back label of the peanut butter jar.

A more comprehensive list of all the Jif peanut butter recalled products and their numbers can be found on the FDA's website.

What Should I Do if I Have a Contaminated Jif Peanut Butter Jar?

According to the CDC, if you happen to have one of the contaminated Jif peanut butter products included in the recall, you should immediately discard it. The FDA notes that most kinds of peanut butter have a two-year shelf life, and consumers should check any Jif peanut butter products that are already in their homes. Along with discarding the contaminated peanut butter in the trash, the CDC recommends that you thoroughly wash your hands and sanitize any containers or surfaces that may have come into contact with the Jif peanut butter.
