Moen Recalls Battery Back-Ups for Flo Smart Water Monitors Due to Fire Hazard

On April 13, 2023, Moen, a company known and centered around their diverse selection of designed kitchen and bath faucets, showerheads, bath safety products, and other home appliances, in collaboration with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada, have issued a recall for one of their products due to reports of potential fire hazards. According to the recall posted on their website, based on the information they collected from their customer feedback systems, in rare instances, the Flo Smart Water Monitor Battery Backups, Model 920-001, has been found to overheat, posing a fire hazard.

Since the recall has been issued, Moen claims there have been three reports of backup batteries that have overheated and caught fire. However, from those reports, there were no injuries, and only minor property damage has been documented to have been caused by the Flo Smart Water Monitor Battery Backups. Customers who have shopped with Moen and believe they may have an affected product can file their claim by completing their web form found on the Moen website or by contacting the Moen Smart Water Support Team at 844-633-8356.

Customers can identify whether or not they have the Flo Smart Water Monitor Battery Backups by the following:

  • If they have the dark gray rectangular battery with the FLO logo printed on the lower right-hand side. 
  • A sticker showing the status of the light on the battery is printed on the lower left-hand side.
  • If the battery sticker has the model number 920-001.

Please note that the recall only involves the Flo Smart Water Monitor Battery Backups, all other aspects of the product, including the Flo Smart Water Monitor, the Shutoff itself, and other included accessories, are still safe for you to use. The Flo Smart Water Monitor that included the Battery Backups were sold from August 2019 through November 2022 at Lowe’s, The Home Depot, and other stores nationwide, including online retailers like Amazon.com, for about $250 for the battery.     Customers Should Properly Dispose of Their Battery Backups

    Moen asks their customers, if they are in possession of the recalled lithium-ion batteries, to dispose of them in accordance with the applicable laws in their area. This means that customers should follow any and all procedures established by their municipal recycling center for damaged/defective/recalled lithium batteries. Due to the potentially hazardous nature of the recalled batteries, they urge you not to throw the recalled battery in the trash or deposit it into used battery recycling boxes at various retail and home improvement stores.

    According to Moen, in order to properly uninstall the Battery Backup for disposal without disturbing the connection to the Flo Smart Water Monitor and Shutoff, customers can take the following actions:

    • Disconnect/unplug the power adapter from the electrical outlet
    • Disconnect/unplug the Flo Smart Battery Backup from the water monitor and shutoff and the power adapter
    • Restore power to the Flo Smart Water Monitor and Shutoff by connecting the adapter to the monitor and to the electrical outlet
    • Firmly push the power cord into the Flo Smart Water Monitor and Shutoff
    • Twist and turn until the second ring is entirely in the device

    Customers can tell that the Flo Smart Water Monitor and Shutoff has power when the LED lights on the device have reactivated and turned green.     What Remedies Can Moen Customers Expect to Receive?

    In their FAQ section of the recall page, Moen informed their customers that they currently are not offering replacements for the Flo Smart Water Monitor Battery Backups and currently do not have an alternative battery backup option for sale. However, they are currently working to develop a new battery backup that is rated for indoor use to support the Flo Smart Water Monitor in the future. Until then, those customers who have filed their recalled backup batteries can expect a refund in the form of a check within 8-12 weeks.
