    What Is Hurricane Insurance?

Hurricane season lasts from the beginning of June to the end of November. During this time, properties up and down the Atlantic Coast face the prospect of significant property damage. Having the right insurance policies can protect you against these losses.

Generally speaking, there is no single policy that protects against hurricane damage. Instead, you can purchase a homeowners insurance policy that includes windstorm damage, along with flood insurance to address the two major threats hurricanes present: wind and water damage.

However, as a North Carolina resident, you are subject to a hurricane deductible – an amount of money you must pay before your homeowners insurance policy kicks in. If, for example, your home is insured for $200,000 and you have a 1% deductible, you would pay the first $2,000 of the claim out of pocket.

Why Do I Need a Lawyer?

From broken doors and windows to flooding and structural damage, there’s virtually no limit to the destruction a hurricane can cause. Unfortunately, the insurance company likely won’t recoup your losses without a fight. Instead, they might:

    • Deny, delay, or undervalue your claim
    • Neglect to pay your claim under the appropriate coverage category
    • Falsely assert that certain damages are not covered by your policy
    • Refuse to pay your claim unless you sign a release of supplemental claims
    • Deny that your coverage exists

If you encounter difficulties getting your claim paid, contact our North Carolina attorneys. We can evaluate the facts to identify the true value of your claim, then pursue full compensation on your behalf.
