Hurricane Travel Insurance

If you’re traveling to or from Miami, the Bahamas, the Outer Banks, or another area often hit by hurricanes, you may be considering buying hurricane travel insurance. But insurance policies aren’t famous for their clarity, so it’s not always obvious which ones are worth the money.

Here is what you need to know about hurricane travel insurance, and what you should do if an insurance company isn’t fulfilling their end of the bargain.

    What Is Hurricane Travel Insurance?

When booking a cruise or another vacation, you may have the chance to buy hurricane travel insurance, which protects against changes or cancellations caused by hurricanes. The idea is that if a hurricane disrupts your travel, you will be reimbursed for your flight, hotel, and other expenses. As with most insurance policies, though, there can be quite a bit of fine print, and getting reimbursed can be trickier than you thought or hoped.

How Does Hurricane Travel Insurance Work?

Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as receiving a full refund for your trip because meteorologists are projecting nasty weather. Here are some examples of things that have to happen in order for you to be reimbursed:

    • Your arrival at your destination needs to be delayed at least 24 hours.
    • You must be forced to evacuate your hotel or resort.
    • An airport is closed or a road/route is impassable because of the weather.

Even if your trip is delayed by several hours and you can’t do all the activities you’d planned to do at your destination, you aren’t necessarily entitled to a refund. Moreover, you aren’t owed a refund because of potential disruptions — only disruptions that have actually occurred.

In short, it’s not as simple as canceling a trip and getting your money back because the weather looks bad. You have to try and go on the vacation, and if it’s disrupted enough (or canceled), you can then seek reimbursement.

When Should I Buy Hurricane Travel Insurance?

This is a key element of these policies that many people don’t realize:

    • You must purchase hurricane travel insurance 24+ hours prior to a storm warning or naming of the hurricane.

You can’t wait until a hurricane is announced before buying the policy. You have to purchase it well in advance, because it’s usually written as a policy for unforeseen weather events.

If you think there is a significant risk of your vacation being delayed a day or more by a tropical storm, it’s probably worth buying hurricane travel insurance when you book the trip. Don’t tell yourself, “I’ll wait and see if there’s a storm warning to decide,” because by then it will be too late.

What Should I Do if the Insurance Company Refuses to Pay a Valid Claim?

Whether it’s hurricane travel insurance or a homeowners policy that covers wind and flood damage, if your insurance company is giving you trouble, you should speak with an attorney. Insurance companies often deny, delay, or undervalue legitimate claims. Just because they said “No” doesn’t mean you’re not entitled to compensation.
