Pennsylvania Chocolate Factory Explosion Lawsuit

The chocolate factory explosion occurred around 4:57 p.m. on March 24, 2023, at the R.M. Palmer Company in West Reading, Pennsylvania, located about 60 miles northwest of Philadelphia. The Palmer company first opened the plant in 1942.

According to officials, an investigation to determine the official cause of the chocolate factory explosion will be conducted.

PEMA Communications Director Ruth A. Miller explained in a statement, "In the initial incident report from Berks County to PEMA, a reference to a gas leak was included. It is really important to note that incident reports from counties are a snapshot in time of the understanding of the incident at the time the report was made." 

While the matter is still being investigated, no matter the reason for the explosion—leaky gas pipes, poor factory design, faulty safety controls, out-of-date equipment, or anything else—one fact remains: these tragedies should never happen.

The explosion killed at least seven people and injured numerous others. One person had been found alive in the rubble during an overnight search.

Tower Heath said earlier its hospital in West Reading received 10 patients from the explosion. Of those injured, two were admitted and are in good and fair condition, and six have been discharged. Two others were transferred to other hospitals.

West Reading Mayor Samantha Kaag issued an emergency declaration Saturday to access more resources for emergency responders on the scene.
