Tesla Accident Death

Tesla has generated significant buzz in the automotive space. The Silicon Valley giant dominates electric car sales in the United States and, as of early 2020, is valued at upwards of $90 billion.

But not all is well with Tesla. Tragically, several people have died in car accidents involving these vehicles in the past few years, often on account of the company’s Autopilot feature. Below we take a look at some of the more notable fatal Tesla car accidents.

  • Fatal Tesla Accidents

Tesla vehicles have been involved in several fatal crashes in recent years:

    • On January 18, 2020, the driver of a Tesla Model S was killed after the vehicle jumped a curb, struck a traffic light, and crashed into a brick wall.
    • On December 29, 2019, two people were killed in a speeding Tesla Model S that ran a red light and slammed into another vehicle at an intersection.
    • That same day, a Tesla Model 3 struck a parked fire truck on a freeway, claiming the life of a passenger.
    • On March 1, 2019, the driver of a Tesla Model 3 on Autopilot was killed on a highway after his car collided with a tractor-trailer.
    • On March 23, 2018, a Tesla Model X P100D, also using Autopilot, slammed into a safety barrier and caught fire. The driver suffered fatal injuries in the crash.
  • What Causes Fatal Tesla Accidents?

Tesla has recently come under scrutiny from federal officials for its Autopilot technology. Notably, the National Transportation Safety Board found that it was likely at fault for the March, 2018 crash.

The problem is, there appears to be a discrepancy between the way Autopilot is marketed to consumers and how it actually works. Tesla describes Autopilot as “an advanced driver assistance system” that “reduces your overall workload as a driver.” It’s natural then, to think, that the car is self-driving and requires little-to-no manual operation. Many drivers think that they can tune out behind the wheel and get from Point A to Point B without incident. Clearly that is not always the case.

  • What Happens If I Lose a Loved One in a Tesla Crash?

Taking legal action may not be your top priority in the aftermath of a tragic loss, but it’s important to know that you may have recourse. A wrongful death lawsuit can help alleviate the considerable financial and emotional burdens you face without the support of your loved one.

Wrongful death may be the result of negligence, recklessness, or deliberate misconduct. If, for example, Tesla supplied defective products or falsely advertised their use, they may be legally at fault (or “liable”) for a resulting fatality.
