The Week in Recalls: December 29, 2023 - product recall

The following product recalls have been announced this week—make sure you’re in the know.

Philips Panorama 1.0t HFO Magnetic Resonance Imagers (MRIs)

Philips has recalled 340 MRI machines because they may explode in an emergency. During a “quench,” when the magnet coils are no longer at near-absolute zero and lose their superconductivity, the helium gas used to super-cool the coils evaporates and could cause the device to rupture. This can result in property damage or serious injury from chemical exposure, lack of oxygen, tissue damage, and mechanical trauma.

2020 – 2022 Honda CR-V SUVs

Honda is recalling 106,000 CR-V hybrid SUVs because of a potential fire risk. A missing fuse on a 12-volt battery cable outside of the vehicle can cause the battery cable to short circuit or overheat during a crash, potentially sparking a fire.

2020 – 2022 Toyota Sienna, RAV4, Corolla, and Camry Vehicles

Toyota is recalling approximately one million vehicles, specifically Sienna, RAV4, Corolla, and Camry vehicles released between 2020 and 2022, which may be equipped with airbags that may not deploy. The Toyota and Lexus vehicles included in the recall have passenger seat sensors that could have been improperly manufactured. If the sensor malfunctions and fails to register the weight of the passenger, a crash might not trigger the airbag.

Americaine 20% Benzocaine Topical Anesthetic Spray

Insight Pharmaceuticals has recalled Americaine 20% Benzocaine Topical Anesthetic Spray over a cancer-causing chemical. A sample from a lot of the product showed a low level of benzene in the can, and exposure to benzene can result in leukemia, blood cancer of the bone marrow, and blood disorders, all of which can be life-threatening.
