The Fourth of July is one of the America’s favorite holidays, a time for family to come together and share food, drinks, and wonderful times in the sun. Outdoor activity hazards and dangerous road conditions are all things to be cautious about while enjoying your well-earned holiday weekend.
Everyone deserves to have a wonderful time on the most patriotic weekend of the year, but it is important to take a few precautions to protect yourself and your family. Here are some fun events around St. Petersburg for everyone to enjoy and simple tips for how to safely celebrate the holiday weekend.
Swing Gang’s Fourth of July Dance
On Sunday, July 3, adults can enjoy drinks, dancing, and live music at the Museum of Fine Arts. Take advantage of the cash bar with beer and wine, but be sure to plan ahead to get home responsibly. The Fourth of July holiday is the deadliest day of the year for motorists, and alcohol largely contributes to these risks on the road, so be sure to arrange for a cab or designated driver.
Pinellas County law enforcement agencies will be on DUI patrol during the Fourth of July weekend to prevent car accidents and ensure everyone gets home from their fun evening safely.
Fourth of July at Upham Beach
Admission to Upham Beach is free, so there is no excuse not to grab your friends and family and enjoy fireworks on the shore. The annual firework show begins at 9 p.m. on July 4 and the fireworks will be launched by professionals, so you can enjoy the stunning display safely. Although we all know fireworks are illegal in Florida, parents should still be careful when giving children sparklers to play with. Sparklers are a popular and legal handheld firework, but can cause third-degree burns to children, so be sure to always supervise your children as they play with them.
Fourth of July in Downtown St. Petersburg
You can also enjoy the fireworks from many of Downtown St. Petersburg’s waterfront parks. The fireworks display begins at 9 p.m. on July 4, and one of the best spots to watch the beautiful light show is the pier along 2nd Avenue NE. As you drive through the downtown area, lower your speed and be careful for pedestrians who are walking around and having a good time on foot. Be especially cautious of those leaving restaurants and bars intoxicated, as one in three pedestrians nationally is killed while drunk walking.
