On December 5, 2014, the women’s clothing retailer Bebe confirmed that a number of its stores were affected by a data breach that took place during the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving.
Between November 8 and November 26, 2014, hackers gained access to Bebe’s payment processing systems and stole customers’ information from payment cards swiped in stores throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In a press release, the retailer said that hackers may have accessed cardholders’ names, account numbers, expiration dates and verification codes.

The announcement came after a report from KrebsonSecurity{: target="_blank"} claimed that several banks were noticing patterns of fraudulent charges on customers’ credit or debit cards that had been used at Bebe. According to the report, payment card information was also being sold on an underground cybercrime shop at the time.
Bebe said that reports of the attack spurred the company to hire a leading computer security firm to investigate the claims. The company also stated that the attack has been stopped.
“Our relationship with our customers is of the highest importance,” Chief Executive Officer of Bebe stores Jim Wiggett said. “We moved quickly to block this attack and have taken steps to further enhance our security measures.”
While Bebe said that customers should feel confident using their credit or debit cards at its stores, the retailer urged affected shoppers to continue checking their debit and credit card statements any signs of fraudulent charges. Furthermore, Bebe is offering one year of free credit monitoring to affected shoppers, which can be accessed by calling 888-236-0447 Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. PST.
