People joke about a world without lawyers, but that actually is what the big corporations would love. That’s what tort reform is. The insurance companies, the pharmaceutical companies, the big oil companies and the big polluters would love a world where they didn’t have to deal with lawyers because lawyers are the--trial lawyers, particularly--are the entity that counterbalances corporate power in a democracy. And the only way that the little guy ever has any kind of opportunity for justice in our society is if the trial lawyers continue to operate. And corporations want to see an end to that.
