FL Worker in Stable Condition After Being Crushed by Wall

A Florida construction worker is in stable condition after a rebar wall fell on his upper body in West Palm Beach on Jan. 9, The Palm Beach Post reported. The incident occurred at One West Palm, a pair of towers on the north side of downtown. The wall that fell on the worker was intended to serve as a skeleton to pour concrete over later.

Crews were called to the building at around 12:40 p.m. They brought medical gear to the 13th floor with a construction elevator. The worker was pulled from under the wall, but crews were unable to use the elevator to bring the man down. Instead, they strapped him to a rescue basket and attached it to a crane, which carried the man to rescue crews below. He was taken in stable condition by ambulance to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach.

Florida workers’ compensation law requires that employers cover certain benefits for workers injured in work-related accidents. Florida workers’ compensation covers medical costs due to accidents on the job and entitles you to up to two-thirds of your average weekly wages for days missed due to injury. Even if your wounds merely force you to reduce your earnings, you may be entitled to partial-disability benefits, which vary by injury.

Since workplace injuries are costly events, businesses usually opt to purchase workers’ compensation insurance, and in many cases, they are required by law to do so. Since insurance companies seek to maximize their profits, they will often try to deny you the full value of what you are legally entitled to. Without an experienced attorney who knows what your rights are and how to fight for them, you could be left paying out of pocket for an injury that is the responsibility of your employer.
