A worker suffered a severe injury on a Silver Spring, Maryland, construction site when a crane ran over his leg, WJLA reported. The accident occurred around 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 6 on a site for the new Purple Line, a light-rail project of the Maryland Transportation Administration to allow commuters to travel between Maryland stations of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority without having to travel into the city to do so. Pete Piringer, head spokesman for the Montgomery County Fire Rescue Service, described the scene of the incident as a “pinch point.” The worker’s right leg was crushed beneath one of the crane’s two metal tracks in an area that contained other construction materials nearby.
The employee was rushed to MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., in critical condition and is expected to survive. The crane operator was also examined for anxiety from being a witness to the aftermath. The incident is being investigated by Maryland Occupational Safety and Health, which has not formally named a cause of the accident.
