Why: The recall was issued after research indicated if a water bead is ingested, it will expand and can pose ingestion, choking, and intestinal obstruction hazards inside a child’s body, resulting in severe discomfort, vomiting, dehydration, and a risk of death to a child.

When: The recall was issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Buffalo Games LLC of Buffalo, New York, on September 14, 2023.

Where: The Chuckle & Roar Ultimate Water Beads Activity Kits were solely sold at Targets nationwide. 

How Customers Can Identify the Recalled Product: The Chuckle & Roar Ultimate Water Beads Activity Kits come in a purple container and are labeled “Ultimate Water Beads Activity Kit.” On the back of the container, customers can find the UPC Number 079346627035. “Water beads are marketed as fun sensory toys for kids but can be deadly to babies and small children if they are ingested,” The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission chair Alexander Hoehn-Saric said in a statement concerning the recent recall of the Chuckle & Roar Ultimate Water Beads Activity Kits after reports of a 10-month-old child’s death was directly linked to the water beads was announced on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commissions (CPSC) website. 

On September 14, 2023, the CPSC and Buffalo Games LLC of Buffalo, New York, announced the recall of roughly 52,000 Chuckle & Roar Ultimate Water Beads Activity Kits due to ingestion, choking, and obstruction hazards. According to their findings, the water beads pose a risk of severe injury or death if ingested as the beads grow in size, which can cause intestinal obstruction.

According to the toy company Buffalo Games, it has received one report of a 10-month-old child’s death from swallowing the recalled water beads in July 2023 in Wisconsin and another in November 2022 that a 9-month-old child in Maine was seriously injured after consuming the water beads, which caused an intestinal obstruction requiring surgery to remove them.

As mentioned, the recall involves the Chuckle & Roar Ultimate Water Beads Activity Kit. Customers will find the label on the front of the purple container states, “Ultimate Water Beads Activity Kit.” The kit comes packed with 2 ounces of the “jumbo” water beads and 6 ounces of “regular” water beads. The kit also includes the following items:

  • A clear container and lid
  • Five small toy fish
  • Scissor scoop
  • Tweezers
  • Scoop with a handle
  • Ten activity cards
  • Activity instructions

As mentioned, the activity kit was sold in a purple box, and customers can locate the UPC Number 079346627035 on the back of the containers. The recalled Chuckle & Roar Ultimate Water Beads Activity Kits were manufactured in China and were imported by Target Corporation of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and sold exclusively at Target stores nationwide and online at Target.com from March 2022 through November 2022 for roughly $15.

Due to the safety hazard behind the water beads, consumers who find they are in possession of the product should immediately stop all use and take the recalled Chuckle & Roar Ultimate Water Beads Activity Kits away from children. Customers can request a full refund from  Buffalo Games by completing their return form online at https://chuckleandroar.com/recall. The online form includes all the instructions on how to return the product in a prepaid mailing package supplied by the firm or return the product to any Target store nationwide.
