If you’ve ever driven down a highway, listened to the radio, or watched TV, chances are you’ve come across some of the personal injury firms in your area. With so many options, how do you go about choosing the right lawyer if you need one?

Every case is different, but some things apply to all of them. Here are some things to keep in mind when doing your research.

  1. Are they an expert in your type of accident? Some attorneys are more experienced in auto accidents and slip-and-fall cases, while others understand the complex ins and outs of medical malpractice suits.
  2. Do they have the resources to put up a fight? Not all firms have the time, staff, or resources to put in the work necessary to recover the most money for you or go to trial.
  3. What does their track record look like? You can tell a lot about an attorney by their past wins. Don’t be afraid to ask about their success rate and big wins.
  4. How do they get paid? Most personal injury attorneys work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid from your settlement amount. Some don’t. Be sure their fee structure is something that works for you before you hire them.
  5. Do they go to trial? Not all attorneys want to end up in a courtroom and will avoid it, which could mean a lower settlement for you. You don’t have to settle for this.
  6. Are you comfortable working with them? Yes, you should like your attorney! Having a personal connection with the person representing you can make the process less stressful.

If you’re still unsure about who to pick, ask around. An attorney’s reputation can be a good indicator of success.
