On January 22, 2020, Morgan & Morgan attorney Paul Pennock—along with Virginia E. Anello of Douglas & London PC and Parvin Aminolroaya of Seeger Weiss LLP—was appointed Co-Lead Counsel of the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee in the Elmiron MDL (multidistrict litigation) by the honorable Judge Brian R. Martinotti in the Elmiron (Pentosan Polysulfate Sodium) Products Liability Litigation.
About the appointments, Attorney Pennock said, “I am honored by this appointment and applaud Judge Brian R. Martinotti’s dedication to advancing diversity in leadership positions.” Pennock continued, “Judiciously but firmly, Judge Martinotti ensured not only that leadership counsel reflected diversity but, importantly, that the committee members have the experience and talent to pursue justice for these plaintiffs.”
Paul Pennock is revered as one of the most experienced MDL litigators in the country. His previous leadership roles in numerous multidistrict litigations have endowed him with a proven track record of successfully pursuing and resolving mass tort litigations in product liability and pharmaceuticals. In 2019, Pennock was also the recipient of the Clarence Darrow Award, which recognizes attorneys with exceptional conviction in their work.
Janssen Pharmaceuticals Continues to Market Elmiron
In the MDL, plaintiffs allege that the manufacturer Janssen Pharmaceuticals—a unit off of Johnson & Johnson—was aware that Elmiron—a drug prescribed to treat interstitial cystitis, also known as bladder pain syndrome—had disproportionately caused vision problems for women. Some of the reported issues include macular degeneration, retinal hemorrhage, and light perception blindness.
Despite the evidence connecting Elmiron with significant eye degeneration, Janssen Pharmaceuticals continued to market the drug without warning the public of the risk of eye disease, putting millions at risk for vision loss and other severe eye conditions. There are currently 140 cases pending in the MDL, some dating back as early as 1997.
If you or a loved one have been diagnosed with a severe eye disease or have experienced adverse side effects after using Elmiron, you may be entitled to legal recourse. At Morgan & Morgan, our attorneys are proud to fight for you. As Attorney Pennock said, “I am proud to be a part of such a talented and diverse group and look forward to arguing our case in front of an exemplary jurist.”
