Injured?

We can help.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an urgent food safety advisory telling consumers not to eat certain bags of frozen shrimp sold at Walmart. The products, sold under Walmart’s Great Value brand, may have been exposed to Cesium-137 (Cs-137), a radioactive isotope that can increase the risk of cancer with repeated exposure.

This shocking announcement follows testing conducted by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which detected Cs-137 in shipping containers from an Indonesian seafood supplier.

Although contaminated containers were stopped at ports in Los Angeles, Houston, Savannah, and Miami, related shipments had already reached Walmart shelves across 13 states.

Which Shrimp Are Affected at Walmart?

The recall applies to Great Value brand frozen shrimp produced by Indonesian company PT Bahari Makmur Sejati (BMS Foods).

If you purchased Great Value frozen shrimp, check your freezer immediately. Look out for lot codes 8005540-1, 8005538-1, and 8005539-1, all with a “Best by Date” of March 15, 2027.

If your product matches any of the above, do not consume it. Dispose of it safely or return it to Walmart for a refund.

These details matter not only for consumer safety but also for legal accountability. In any future lawsuits, demonstrating that your product matches the recalled lot codes is important for establishing legal standing.

Why Is Cesium-137 Dangerous?

Cesium-137 (Cs-137) is a radioactive material produced as a byproduct of nuclear reactions. While the levels detected in some containers were below the FDA’s intervention threshold, health experts warn that even low-dose exposure can be harmful over time. Prolonged ingestion may cause DNA damage and increase the likelihood of certain cancers.

The FDA has stated that the shrimp may have been prepared, packed, or held under unsanitary conditions, further raising safety concerns under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

If Harmed, You May Be Eligible for a Lawsuit

At Morgan & Morgan, we represent consumers harmed by unsafe and contaminated products.

In cases like this, details such as lot codes and “Best By” dates are essential evidence.

Under U.S. law, to bring a successful lawsuit, plaintiffs need what’s known as Article III standing. That means you must show:

  1. Injury – You were personally harmed (financially or physically).
  2. Traceability – The injury can be directly linked to the defendant’s product.
  3. Redressability – A court can provide a remedy (such as compensation).

By including lot codes and “Best By” dates, consumers can prove they purchased from the contaminated batch. This strengthens both individual claims and potential class action lawsuits.
