data breach alert

Morgan & Morgan’s industry-leading data privacy attorneys are investigating Belk Inc. following reports of a data breach involving unauthorized access to customer and employee data. According to recent lawsuits, a cybersecurity incident in May may have exposed sensitive personally identifiable information. If you received a notification letter, ACT NOW.

We are investigating, among other things, the following:

  • how Belk acquired the sensitive information;
  • whether Belk should have had the sensitive information;
  • why Belk stored this sensitive information in a vulnerable digital environment;
  • whether Belk encrypted the sensitive information it stored;
  • whether Belk deleted sensitive information it no longer had a reasonable need to maintain;
  • whether Belk implemented appropriate and adequate security measures to protect the sensitive information it stored;
  • and whether Belk has provided affected individuals adequate protection and compensation for any harms they have experienced as a result of the data breach.

According to recent lawsuits filed in North Carolina court, Belk’s systems were compromised during a May 2025 cyberattack. The lawsuits claim that Belk failed to implement adequate data security measures and did not timely notify affected individuals. One complaint, filed by a former employee, alleges the exposure of Social Security numbers and other personal information.

The type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Names
  • Social Security numbers
  • Contact information
  • Employment-related data
  • Possibly payment or account details
