We can help.

In February 2025, Absolute Dental, a major Nevada dental practice with more than 50 locations across Las Vegas, Carson City, Reno, Sparks, and Minden, suffered a significant cyberattack.

Months later, the full impact has come to light: more than 1.2 million individuals had their sensitive personal and health information exposed.

The news has left patients concerned over their private information falling into the wrong hands, and wanting answers about the vulnerabilities in healthcare data security.

What Happened at Absolute Dental?

Absolute Dental first detected suspicious activity within its information systems on February 26, 2025. According to the company’s notice, unauthorized third-party access lasted until March 5, 2025.

A third-party cybersecurity firm later confirmed that the attacker had infiltrated the network by exploiting a legitimate software tool linked to Absolute Dental’s managed services provider.

Essentially, the attacker either tricked an employee into running a malicious version of the tool or abused the provider’s privileged access to install it, giving them direct entry into Absolute Dental’s systems.

The Scope of the Breach

On July 28, 2025, after months of forensic review, Absolute Dental confirmed the staggering scale of the breach: 1,223,635 individuals had their data compromised.

Exposed information may include:

  • Names and contact details
  • Dates of birth
  • Social Security numbers
  • Driver’s license or state-issued ID numbers
  • Passport or other government-issued ID information
  • Medical history, diagnoses, and treatment details
  • Health insurance and benefits data
  • Patient identification or MRN numbers
  • Financial account and/or payment card information (for a subset of patients)

In short, this wasn’t just basic contact info. For many, deeply sensitive personal, financial, and health information was left vulnerable.

How Patients Were Affected

Absolute Dental reported the incident to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in May 2025, initially estimating the impact at just 501 individuals. However, that number was later updated when the Oregon Attorney General’s office was informed of the true figure—over 1.2 million patients.

Affected individuals are now at risk of:

  • Identity theft: With Social Security numbers, IDs, and even passports exposed, criminals could open fraudulent accounts or commit tax fraud.
  • Financial fraud: For patients whose payment card information was compromised, bank and credit card accounts may be at risk.
  • Medical identity theft: Using stolen health insurance information, criminals could fraudulently obtain care or prescriptions in a patient’s name.

Absolute Dental has begun mailing notification letters and is offering two years of complimentary credit monitoring services.

Why Healthcare Data Breaches Are So Serious

Medical records are among the most valuable types of personal data on the black market. Unlike a stolen credit card that can be quickly canceled, health histories and Social Security numbers can’t simply be replaced. Victims often face years of fallout from fraud, damaged credit, or misused medical identities.

What You Can Do If You Were Affected

If you received a notice from Absolute Dental or suspect you may be impacted, take these steps immediately:

  1. Enroll in credit monitoring offered by Absolute Dental.
  2. Check your credit reports regularly for suspicious activity.
  3. Place a fraud alert or credit freeze with major credit bureaus.
  4. Monitor your medical statements and insurance claims for unusual charges.
  5. Report identity theft right away at IdentityTheft.gov.
