Graduating Magna Cum Laude from Indiana State University, he embarked on a career in the insurance industry, initially serving as a claims adjuster and later advancing to the role of claims manager at a major insurance company. During this time, he pursued his legal aspirations and successfully obtained his Juris Doctor from the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law.

Prior to merging with Morgan & Morgan, John was a partner in Smith Law LLC, alongside his brother Brandon W. Smith. John honed his skills in handling a wide array of personal injury cases. Their practice encompassed litigation in state and federal courts across Indiana and the Commonwealth of Kentucky, establishing a reputation for exceptional advocacy and dedication to their clients' rights.
