Meet James L. McCoy
James McCoy began his academic journey at Alma College, where he completed his undergraduate studies and graduated in 2012. Driven by a desire to pursue a career in advocacy, he then moved to the city to attend the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. During his time in law school, he focused on mastering legal analysis and trial strategy, including his work as a student public defender representing misdemeanor defendants in district court, and ultimately earned his Juris Doctor in 2017. Following his graduation, James was admitted to practice law in all Michigan state courts as well as the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.
Following his admission to the bar, James gained valuable experience working on the defense side of civil litigation for the first eight years of his career. Through this extensive work, he learned the nuts and bolts of how insurance companies evaluate, manage, and handle their cases, while successfully obtaining numerous favorable trial verdicts for his clients across a wide variety of matters. Despite achieving professional success in this arena, James increasingly felt that his true calling was to pivot his practice toward helping individuals who were wrongfully injured, using the knowledge and expertise he had acquired to champion their pursuit of justice.
Today, James brings this valuable strategic background and his dedication to helping others to the Morgan & Morgan team at the Detroit office. As a versatile personal injury attorney, he handles a wide variety of challenging cases, including premises liability, slip and falls, negligent security, dog bites, and animal attacks. He is also deeply committed to guiding families through some of life's most difficult moments by taking on complex cases involving wrongful death as well as severe burn and fire injuries.
