Motorcycle Accident

Motorcycle accidents rates are increasing on rural roads.

Motorcycle accidents

Motorcycle accidents are on the rise as roads become overcrowded, and drivers are being distracted by more gadgets than ever before. These accidents can result in permanent physical disability and create financial adversity for victims and their families.

Motorcyclists are injured in riding accidents four times more often than other drivers, and they are 21 times more likely to be killed in a crash. Although less than two percent of vehicles in the United States are motorcycles, bikers make up eight percent of all deaths on the roadway. According to a Motorcycle Safety Foundation report, in 2001 motorcycle collisions rose .57 percent to 76,337, and motorcycle deaths jumped 3.89 percent to 2,909. Also in 2001, Florida had more motorcycle accidents, injuries, and fatalities than any other state. A common cause of motorcycle accidents is the failure of other drivers to see and identify motorcycles in dense traffic. In 2/3 of those crashes, the other driver fails to yield to the motorcyclist and causes the accident. This type of accident often occurs when the motorcycle is approaching from the opposite direction, and the driver of the car either does not see or misjudges the distance of the motorcycle down the road. The driver of the car assumes it is safe to make a left turn and ends up colliding with the oncoming motorcycle.

Causes of motorcycle accidents
  • Inexperienced riding skills
  • Pushing the motorcycle to dangerous limits
  • Aggressive maneuvering
  • Lack of defensive driving
  • Insufficient cornering and braking skills
  • Failure to take preventative measures unique to riding
  • Extreme speed
