Equifax Sends Inaccurate Credit Reports of Millions

Back in May 2022, Equifax reported that their systems had experienced a glitch from mid-March through early April. It has been reported that during this time, Equifax sent inaccurate scores on individuals applying for credit cards, mortgages, and auto loans to lenders across the country—including banks like Wells Fargo & Co., JPMorgan Chase & Co., and Ally Financial Inc. According to the report, the scores sent were at times off by 20 points or more in either direction. The variations in the scores were enough to drastically alter the interest rates consumers were offered for their loans—in some cases, resulting in applications being rejected altogether. If you believe the 2022 Equifax glitch affected your credit score, our attorneys may be able to help you.

Morgan & Morgan

    What Exactly Is Equifax?

Equifax Inc., founded in 1899, is a consumer credit reporting agency and is one of the three largest consumer credit reporting agencies in the United States, along with Experian and TransUnion. Equifax uses information provided by its consumers to curate a credit score. Then, when a consumer applies for a loan, be it for something like a home, car, credit card, or personal loan from a bank, the lender will use companies like Equifax to request the consumer's information. With the information provided by Equifax, the loan company will then decide, based on their credit history, whether or not to grant a loan and what the interest rate will be.

    Was My Credit Score Affected?

    Possibly.

While it was reported that over one million scores were altered, during the Mid-March early April time period, in a statement by Sid Singh, president of Equifax's U.S. Information Solutions, "For those consumers that did experience a score shift, initial analysis indicates that only a small number of them may have received a different credit decision." However, multiple lenders have reported a good percentage of their consumer's scores were drastically affected. In order to see if your score fluctuated during the three-week period, consumers can check the banks or loan companies they initially applied to.
