Ten years ago, our very own Matt Morgan brought a charity walk to Orlando in order to raise money to grant sick children. The Walk for Wishes Orlando has become an annual event that raises hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Make-A-Wish-Foundation, returning for a 10th time this coming March.
The Walk for Wishes is a fundraiser that is held around the country to raise money for the Make-A-Wish-Foundation. Morgan brought the charity walk to Orlando ten years ago, and the events has gone on to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars, and grant over a thousand wishes.
Founded in 1980, the Make-A-Wish Foundation works to give children with life threatening medical conditions an opportunity to live out their dreams. Typically, a child's wish falls into one of four categories: “I wish to go, I wish to be, I wish to meet, or I wish to have.”
The organization does not put a limit on what the wish can be, and so it is completely up to the imagination of the child to determine the scope of the wish. As one can imagine though, this quickly becomes expensive and more funds are always needed to continue granting wishes.
Last year, the event set out to raise $300,000 and got very close to its goal. This time around, Morgan is setting the bar even higher, attempting to raise $375,000.
Each dollar the charity walk is able to raise will go towards granting a life-changing wish to a child who is battling a life-threatening condition. The average wish costs about $8,000, but the joy of allowing a child to be a kid again, free of doctors, hospitals, and treatment, is priceless.
Thus far, $32,220 has been raised for the 2017 charity walk, nearly 10 percent of the entire goal, and it’s only September 2016. That is just a promising start though, and more participants in the charity run will be required if the goal of raising $375,000 is to be met.
