Walmart MoneyCard Class Action Lawsuit

Our attorneys at Morgan & Morgan are investigating a potential class action lawsuit on behalf of those who use Walmart MoneyCard Visa and MasterCard cards, which are reloadable, prepaid debit cards that allow for wages to be directly deposited onto the cards. Green Dot Bank issues them.

During a four-day period from May 14 to May 18, 2016, account holders of the Walmart MoneyCard Visa and MasterCard cards alleged that the system was down and that they were unable to access their funds on the cards. This deprived some account holders of necessities like food, and prevented others from paying their rent and utilities.

Walmart MoneyCard Visa and MasterCard account holders may be eligible to participate in a class action lawsuit and receive compensation for the immense hardships they experienced when their cards didn’t work. Our class action lawyers can help you. If you would like to learn more, contact us today by filling out the form on this page.

Walmart MoneyCard Lawsuit FAQs

  • What Is the Walmart MoneyCard Visa and MasterCard?

The Walmart MoneyCard MasterCard and Visa cards are prepaid debit cards that can be used online, in stores or anyplace normal debit cards are accepted, which makes them more convenient than cash and more versatile than checks. Green Dot also offers cash back rewards for Walmart purchases, and allows account holders to have their wages directly deposited onto the card. It is even advertised that funds directly deposited onto the Walmart MoneyCard Visa and MasterCard will be available to the account holder the day the transfer from the employer is made – two days sooner than if the direct deposit was made to a traditional banking account.

  • Troubling Disruptions Put People’s Hard-Earned Income at Risk

In or around May 2016, some Walmart MoneyCard Visa and MasterCard account holders received a notification that they would be unable to access their accounts, for funds or information, for a 12-hour period beginning at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday, May 14, 2016. No reason was given, but it has since been uncovered that the disruption in service was necessary to convert to new processing companies, Visa or MasterCard. Unfortunately, the “temporary” loss of access to accounts lasted longer than the expected 12 hours.

The system remained down until May 18, 2016, when it was announced that access had been restored, and the only service affected during the disruption period was balance inquiries. However, since this announcement, cardholders have taken to social media, complaining that the outage went far beyond balance inquiries. Many have said they still can’t access their funds.

  • Major Complaints About the Walmart MoneyCard Visa and MasterCard

During the time the system was down, Walmart MoneyCard Visa and MasterCard account holders did not have access to their funds, causing them immense hardship. Some account holders complained that they were unable to pay for basic essentials such as food, gas, electricity, and rent. Some even said they sustained late fees as a result of not being able to pay for bills with their Walmart MoneyCard.
