A New Jersey Firemen’s Convention event was brought to an abrupt halt Sept. 14 in Wildwood. According to Fox News, three levels of decking attached to a multifamily condominium collapsed on top of one another. At least 22 were injured, including a minimum of three children. Twenty-one of them were taken to the Cape May Regional Health System; the remaining wounded person was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City.
According to The Press of Atlantic City, the balcony of the condo at 222 E. Baker Ave. collapsed around 6 p.m. The people trapped under the structure were quickly removed. Twelve of those injured were Branchville Volunteer Fire Company members or family, Sussex County Fire Marshal Virgil Rome said. Two were transported to the hospital by helicopter. None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening, Rome said. All but one of the wounded had been released by noon the following day. Fire Chief Daniel Speigel initially declined to make a statement as the investigation and cleanup were ongoing.
