Animal Control

Zookeepers

In many zoos, contact between animals and zookeepers is limited and strictly managed, due to the fact that animals accustomed to being around humans are more likely to approach and injure people rather than be frightened by them and run away as they would in the wild. Even with young animals it is preferable that zookeepers avoid raising the young and leave that task to animal's parents to learn important social and communications skills. The less interaction between animal and zookeeper, the safer it is for both of them.

Zookeepers must be very aware of their surroundings and know what is going on at all times. They must be very patient and observant and know everything about animal behavior in order to spot physical or behavioral changes that could lead to potentially dangerous situations. All zoo staff should have emergency training in order to know how to deal with an animal attack.
