Zoloft Cardiac Defects

In 2005, based on current research, the FDA advised that use of Paxil during pregnancy put mothers at an increased risk for delivering children with septal heart defects. However, more recent studies have indicated that women taking Paxil during pregnancy have no greater risk for bearing children with atrial or ventricular septal defects than those taking other SSRIs. In fact, one Danish study found that the use of Zoloft early in pregnancy was also linked to a small increased risk for septal defects.

In addition to women who delivered children with holes in the heart, our Zoloft birth defect attorneys would like to hear from mothers who took Zoloft during pregnancy and delivered children with:

  • Coarctation of the aorta: Children born with coarctation of the aorta have an aorta that is too narrow. This blood vessel is the largest artery, pumping blood directly from the heart, but is under strain in this case, which can lead to serious complications.
  • Tetralogy of fallot (TOF): This reported SSRI heart defect is a combination of four separate conditions that lead to complications in pumping oxygenated blood to the body.
  • Transposition of the great arteries (TGA): A transposition of the great arteries is a defect wherein the aorta and the pulmonary artery are switched, causing them to fuction imporperly.
  • Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS): An underdevelopment of the left side of the heart, hypoplastic left heart syndrome leaves an infant's heart less able to pump oxygen-rich blood to the body.
  • Heart murmurs: These extra sounds made by a heart could point to a number of defects, depending on factors such as timing, intensity, pitch, and others.

If you took this SSRI during pregnancy and delivered a child with any of these heart problems, contact us today for a free evaluation of your Zoloft heart defects claim to find out if you can seek financial compensation.
