Wind Surfing

Wind surfing is a thrilling water sport that takes a lot of skill and talent. It can be an enthralling experience, but it is essential that anyone who participates knows what they are doing and understands the rules of the sea.

Before you wind surf

First, if you don't know how to swim, that is the first step. No one should ever enter the ocean or any large body of water without knowing how to swim well. Next, before you attempt to wind surf, you must take lessons and learn how to properly use your equipment and navigate the waves. Find a class that will teach you all about the gear you will need, how to maintain it and keep it in good condition, and how to use it in the water.

What to wear

Your instructor will explain what you should wear anytime you wind surf. The most important item is a Coast Guard certified life vest. The vest can save your life and keep you above the water if you have an accident. Most wind surfers also recommend gloves and aquatic shoes for your own protection. Anytime you will be out in cold water, it is a good idea to wear a wet suit to help protect you from hypothermia. Another key part of your apparel should be a whistle that is attached to your life vest or wrist. The whistle can be used to attract attention if you are in need of assistance.

Items to bring

When you participate in any water sport, bring along a first aid kit and a cell phone. Keep them on land and have them nearby in case you need light medical attention or to call 911. Also bring plenty of water proof sun screen, and make sure you have it on at all times.

Don't go alone.

Never go out wind surfing by yourself. Take at least one other person with you that you trust. While you are out on the water, the two of you can watch out for each other and provide assistance if needed. As with any water sport, using the buddy system is always a wise decision.

Watch the weather.

Check the forecast before you leave. The nature of the sport requires windy conditions, but it is important to be sure you will have decent weather conditions. If you find there is a storm coming, do not go wind surfing as it will be far too dangerous.

While wind surfing

When you are out on the water, always watch for other surfers, boats and any floating debris that could cause an accident. Understand the rules of the sea when it comes to being near others in the water. You may want to pass someone, and when you do it is up to you to go around them in a safe manner. Be respectful of those around you, do not get close or try to cut them off.

A wind surfer will have the right of way when approaching a boat with a motor, unless it is a commercial vessel. Any commercial vessel gets the right of way all of the time.

Remember to always stay with your board unless it is impossible to do so. If the wind dies down or you are injured, you can cling to the board and paddle to shore. Take steps to be safe when you go out wind surfing, and enjoy your time on the water.
