Water Sports Organizations

Water sports enthusiasts who wish to participate with others can find like minded people by joining organizations and clubs that are devoted to the sport of their choosing. There are many such organizations covering a variety of sports, but the most common are:

  • Canoeing
  • Kayaking
  • Water Skiing

Any club you join will provide you with good tips and advice on how to stay safe in the water. Here are some of the things you will learn:

Know how to swim.

Before participating in any water sport, you must know how to swim. The leaders of your organization will either help you learn, or advise you on where to go for swimming lessons. Until you learn to swim, you will not be eligible to participate in water sports.

Wear a life vest at all times.

The use of vests saves countless lives each year. Most organizations will recommend that you use a Coast Guard certified vest, as they are proven to be effective. Statistics show that failure to wear a vest while in the water is one of the leading causes of drownings.

Don't go out alone.

One of the advantages of joining an organization is that you will always have someone to swim or participate in water sports with you. Having someone else in the water is one of the best preventative techniques you can employ. Another person will be able to watch for danger, and help you if you get into trouble.

Avoid alcohol.

Studies have proven that the use of alcohol is the leading factor in unintentional drownings. Simply put, it is not safe to drink if you are going to be in the water. When you drink, your reaction time is slower and you are less able to deal with emergency situations. Not drinking when you will be swimming, boating or participating in any type of water sport will greatly improve your chances of having a safe experience in the water.

Take safety items with you.

Instructors at any water sports organization will advise you that it is always best to bring a few specific items when you are participating in water related activities. Have a fully stocked first aid kit and a working cell phone nearby on dry land. They are both commonly needed for emergency situations. Carry plenty of sun screen and water with you so that you can avoid burns and remain hydrated throughout the day. When you will be in any type of boat, keep these items in a water proof bag and attach the bag to a secure surface so you won't lose it if the vessel capsizes.

Watch the weather.

Bad weather can ruin any water sport and lead to dangerous situations. The organizers of your group will be sure to pay attention to the forecast and cancel any outing that will be faced with bad weather conditions.

Joining a water sports organization can be a great way to meet people and participate in sports that interest you. It is also a good opportunity to learn how to stay safe every time you are in the water.
