In 1929 the International Association of Chiefs of Police held a meeting to put together a system of gathering reliable and understandable data about crime statistics and criminals. This led to the creation of the The Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program. By 1930, The Federal Bureau of Investigations began to collect this information and published their findings in a series of important reports. The statistics which made up this report were gathered from close to 17,000 law enforcement agencies that cooperated with the FBI on this project.
Crime in the United States
This publication, also known as CIUS, is printed annually. It includes data about criminal offenses and the rate at which those crimes were committed within cities, states and the nation. It is used to better understand the type of frequency of crimes committed in every area of The United States. This allows law enforcement agencies to better identify potential crime zones and to have a deeper understanding of how they may fight against crime in their district.
Hate Crime Statistics
This is another FBI publication that focuses on hate crimes across the country. Hate crimes are acts of hostility towards individuals bases on their race, sexual preference, religion, a particular disability or ethnicity. These crimes are commonly based on nothing more than perceived notions about another individual.
Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted
The FBI also produces a report which lists every officer who was killed in the line of duty each year. The document includes an explanation about how the death occurred, what weapons were involved in the situation and whether or not the officer was wearing protective body armor.
National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS)
The NIBRS is a division of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program that is responsible for gathering details regarding criminal activities. They put together thorough reports with extensive crime related data that may be useful to law enforcement agencies. These reports are available to any branch of law enforcement, crime students and even the general public.
Crimes Listed in Uniform Crime Reports
The reports cover most every type of crime and include details and statistics for each. Some of the primary criminal acts that are highlighted include:
The FBI will continue to produce Uniform Crime Reports in the hopes of better understanding, and therefore better controlling all types of crime.
