Turf toe occurs frequently in people who play games on artificial surfaces and in those who practice martial arts. Turf toe is characterized by pain in the big toe due to its serious upward bending, which damages the toe's ligaments. Swelling, pain and tenderness at the joint of the big toe are often apparent.
Ice and compression should be applied to the affected area. The toe should also be taped to prevent movement. Usually after two to four days, a person can begin to bear weight on the foot again, but the recovery process can take as long as three to four weeks, depending on the severity of the sprain. Resting and keeping pressure off the foot will help speed up the healing process.
