Toxic Diacetyl in Popcorn Butter Flavoring

Studies by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) indicate high levels of the chemical Diacetyl in popcorn factories, indicating that this may be the cause of Popcorn Lung Disease (Bronchiolitis Obliterans). Popcorn Lung Disease is a rare and irreversible disease of the lungs that is caused by the inhalation of artificial butter vapors; victims often require lung transplants.

Diacetyl is an artificial flavoring used to add butter flavor to microwave popcorn. Diacetyl is listed as a toxic substance, an irritant to the eyes, lungs, and respiratory system, by The Occupational and Health Safety Administration (OSHA). Furthermore, Diacetyl is suspected of causing cumulative lung damage, the symptoms of which are:

  • Irritation to the eyes, mucous membranes, and respiratory system
  • A dry persistent cough
  • Phlegm production, wheezing, and shortness of breath
  • Tired spells
  • Mild fevers and aches
  • Skin irritation culminating in severe rashes
