Tight Calf Muscles
Tight calf muscles are a common problem, especially for runners. They can be caused by a biomechanical problem when walking and running, but poor stretching, warming up and cooling down can cause the muscles to tighten over time. When the muscles are tight, tiny tears can occur, creating spasms that restrict blood flow and thus contribute to further tightening of the calf muscles.
Stretching is the best remedy for tight calf muscles. When stretching, hold the stretch static and do not bounce. Be sure to ease into the stretch and feel that the muscle is being stretched without overstretching. A sports massage therapist can massage the calf muscles to loosen them up and facilitate blood flow to the area.
