Tibialis Posterior Syndrome

Athletes that are involved in sports, such as speed skating or running, especially when there are tight bends that cause the foot to roll inward, are more prone to tibialis posterior syndrome. The syndrome is marked by an inflammation of the tibialis posterior muscle, which is located behind the shin bone (tibia) and runs into a tendon on the inside of the ankle. Tibialis posterior syndrome also causes swelling around the inside, bony part of the ankle.

When suffering from Tibialis posterior syndrome, it is best to rest the foot for a couple of weeks. For the first three days apply cold and then heat. Anti-inflammatory medication can also bring relief. If the pain persists, a plaster cast may be needed for a few weeks, and in serious cases, such as with a complete rupture, surgery may be necessary.
