The quadriceps muscles are located at the front of the thigh, and a strain in this area means that one or more of the quadriceps muscles has been torn. Tears can happen when the muscle is forced to work beyond its capacity or if the muscle is not properly warmed up prior to physical activity.
Thigh strains range from minor to severe. Tightness in the thigh and difficulty walking properly are typical of minor strains. There is moderate swelling and pain when straightening the leg against resistance. Pressing on the muscle also causes pain, and it may be impossible to fully bend the knee. With this type of injury, the RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) should be applied. If there is significant pain, a person should take a break from exercising for up to 5 days and use crutches to walk. Icing and massaging the area will help to speed up recovery.
Severe pain and swelling occur immediately when there has been a severe strain. It is impossible to walk without crutches, and the muscle should be rested for three to twelve weeks.
