Tarsal tunnel syndrome is an inflammation of the two nerves (the medial and lateral plantar nerves) that run just below the bony part on the inside ankle. Inflammation is caused by over pronating, when the foot rolls inward while walking or running. This puts pressure on the nerves and results in tarsal tunnel syndrome.
Symptoms of tarsal tunnel syndrome include pain that radiates into the arch, heal and sometimes the toes. Those with tarsal tunnel will also experience pain when running and when standing for long periods of time. A pins and needles sensation may be felt in the sole of the foot.
Since tarsal tunnel syndrome is caused by over pronation, a specialist should be consulted. The doctor can correct this biomechanical problem and provide personalized orthotics. In the meantime, rest and ice help to reduce the inflammation.
