Knee Injuries

Synovial Plica/Patella Plica

Synovial fluid lubricates the knee and is produced by the synovial sheath. The synovial plica specifically refers to a fold found along the inside of the knee cap. Damage to this part of the knee results in sharp pain felt in the front, inside, or back of the kneecap that intensifies when squatting. The pain can be caused by a single trauma or may appear over time due to overuse, either way, inflammation is always a symptom.

In the case of synovial plica syndrome, the knee should be rested and anti-inflammatory medicines taken to reduce pain. If the problem does not get better in time, surgery may be needed to remove the inflamed tissue, but this is not common.
