The collar bone (clavicle) connects to the breast bone (sternum), and it is possible to damage this joint if the shoulder experiences a hard impact. Sternoclavicular dislocation is a rare yet serious injury. Applying pressure to the area causes pain, which can spread to the shoulder.
If the injury is not severe, rest is the only remedy. In a few weeks an athlete will be able to return to playing sports, but may continue to experience pain for a few months. If the injury is severe, a doctor should perform a CT scan to determine the amount of damage. A patient may be kept at the hospital if there is the fear that blood vessels could be damaged. Surgery is rarely performed and only has a 50% success rate.
