Snorkeling

Snorkeling is a fun way to spend some time in the water and experience the sites that can only be seen under the sea. Anyone who is interested in snorkeling should know how to make it a safe and satisfying activity.

Before you snorkel

The first step is to learn how to swim. It is essential to learn swimming techniques before you enter any large body of water. This will not only provide for your safety, it will also allow you to explore a larger area of the sea.

You will also need to learn how to snorkel properly. It may seem simple, but it is important to understand how to properly use the swim fins and breathe through the snorkel.

Once you have the basics down, practice snorkeling in safe, shallow areas. Get a little experience before attempting to snorkel in deep water.

Buy the right equipment.

While it is possible to rent snorkel gear, most people prefer to purchase their own. Owning the equipment assures you that other people have not used it before you and allows you to keep it in the best shape possible.

It is essential to understand how to use the equipment correctly. Before you get into the water you should know how to clear water out of the snorkel, work the fins well to propel yourself through the water quickly and clean out your mask and put in back on while in the water.

If you plan to snorkel in colder environments, consider investing in a wet or dry suit to keep you warm.

Be safe when snorkeling.

There are a few guidelines that you can follow which will provide you with a safe snorkeling experience every time. For instance, never go snorkeling alone. As with any other activity done in or on the water, it is important to have a partner so you can help each other out if a problem occurs.

Don't stray too far from the boat. While you are snorkeling, look up from time to time to make sure you have not drifted away from your boat. Keep the vessel within an easy to reach range at all times. If you start to lose sight of the boat, you have gone too far.

Check out the weather conditions before you head out on the water. Make sure there are no approaching storms and that the weather is suitable for snorkeling.

Find areas that have been designated as safe for snorkelers. There are many spots that are perfect for this activity that have been researched and mapped for public use.

Wear plenty of sun screen while you are out. You will have the rays from the sun beating down on you all day, and you must protect your skin. Look for a high SPF screen that will not wash off in the water.

Avoid the dangers of the sea.

Snorkelers can observe life under the water, but should never disturb or interfere with it. Leave the animals who inhabit the ocean alone. Remember, you can look, but don't touch.

Keep off the coral when you are in the water. It is easy to damage, and coral grows at a very slow rate. Remember the coral is home to a wide variety of animals and you should respect their habitat. Coral can also be very sharp, so it is easy to cut yourself on it. The last thing you want when you are in the water is to have an open wound. When blood gets in the water, sharks and other predators smell it from far away and will come to investigate the scent as a potential meal.

By observing just a few simple rules, you can have a delightful and safe experience with snorkeling. It is a great way to get up close and view nature under the water.
