Sinkhole Disasters

Sinkholes occur when rock below the land surface, such as limestone, carbonate rock and salt beds, are dissolved by ground water circulating through them, creating spaces and caverns underground. Once the spaces get too big, the land above them collapses suddenly. Sinkholes tend to occur in Florida, Texas, Alabama, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania.

When a sinkhole finally gives way, secure the area with brightly colored flags. Cover the hole with a piece of plywood and inform family and neighbors of the hole. If the hole is very large, contact the local police. It is best to have the hole filled as soon as possible. Never enter a sinkhole.
