Shoulder Injuries

The shoulder consists of the collar bone (clavicle), the shoulder blade (scapula) and the upper arm bone (humerus), as well as various muscles, ligaments and tendons. The shoulder has a remarkable range of motion, capable of moving a full 360 degrees perpendicular to the body. However, the shoulder's range of motion and versatility makes it susceptible to dislocation and inflammation. Visits to orthopedic specialists for shoulder problems have been on the rise over the past 10 years. In 2005 over 13 million people sought medical attention for shoulder pain.

A visit to a doctor regarding shoulder pain is recommended if any of the following scenarios apply:

  • Inability to carry objects or perform daily activities with the arm.
  • Pain while resting or at night.
  • Pain that lasts for more than a few days.
  • Swelling or bruising around the shoulder or arm.
  • Difficulty raising the arm or other mobility problems.

Shoulder pain is most commonly caused by a sore tendon in the rotator cuff. This means that the tendon (a tissue that attaches a muscle to a bone) has become inflamed and is causing soreness and pain. Activities that require heavy or repetitive use of the shoulder, such as painting, lifting, or racket sports, often put a strain on the shoulder, resulting in pain and soreness.

As is the case with all injuries, treatment depends upon the type and severity of the problem. Treatment of shoulder pain always requires resting the arm to let the inflammation subside. In more serious cases of inflammation, a doctor may prescribe a cortisone injection. Ice and or heat should be applied to the area, and many people take part in physical therapy to increase strength and mobility in the shoulder.
