Shin splints are a general pain in the front of the lower leg. Shin splints occur when the calves are exercised more than their counterpart, the shin. Calves are often tight and pull on the shin muscles, making them work harder than normal and causing them to become inflamed.
The main symptom of shin splints is a pain in the front of the lower leg, which disappears with rest and is made worse by physical activity. Symptoms of shin splints are tenderness on the inside of the shin and sometimes swelling. Patients may also complain of pain and tightness when the toes or foot are bent downward, and a doctor sometimes notices bumps when feeling the inside of the shin bone.
For relief from shin splints, rest is key. Avoid heavy impact activities and running on hard surfaces. Taping the shin prior to a running workout can help relieve some of the pressure on the area and reduce pain. Anti-inflammatory medicine and icing the shins after a workout often help to reduce inflammation. Stretching the calf muscles is also crucial, since tight muscles make shin splints worse. Always wear supportive shoes.
