Scoliosis

Scoliosis is the sideways curvature of the spine into an "S" or "C" shape. The curving of the spine is usually caused by an imbalance in the back muscles. Throwing, racket sports and carrying heavy bags on one shoulder can all create muscle imbalances in the spine. Sometimes it is difficult to see the curvature of the spine, but if someone runs their fingers down the spine, they will leave two red lines along the sides of the vertebrae. It is often easier to see the curving of the spine with these red lines.

Scoliosis can be prevented by using both shoulders to carry bags. If you take part in sports that emphasize one side of the body, such as throwing a javelin and racket sports, take time to do exercises and strengthen the other arm.

If the condition is not severe, it will correct itself in time. Sometimes a brace is needed to stop the curve from worsening and should be worn during the majority of the day. In severe cases, when the spine is curved more than 50 degrees, surgery may be needed. Some alternative ways of curing scoliosis include acupuncture and electronic stimulation of the nerves in the back.
