Lower Back Pain

Sacroiliac Joint Pain

The sacroiliac joints are located on either side of the lower part of the spine. The joints allow for the movement of the pelvis and prevent it from fracturing. The sacroiliac joints can easily become inflamed, especially in pregnant women whose hormones relax ligaments in the area in preparation for childbirth. However, most cases of sacroiliitis are due to mechanical problems.

Symptoms of sacroiliac joint injury include pain on either side of the lower back that may spread into the buttocks or groin. The pain makes it difficult to turn over in bed, get in and out of a car and put on shoes and socks.

A doctor will perform various tests to confirm the diagnosis and prescribe anti-inflammatory medication and icing the area to reduce pain. Electrotherapy may also be used to treat the inflamed tissues. Massaging the area will help to relieve tension and increase flexibility.
