Rotator Cuff Injury

The rotator cuff is the group of muscles that control the shoulder joint during rotation. Rotator cuff injuries can arise from tears in the tendons and/or muscles or from inflammation of the joint. Sports and activities that require heavy amounts of shoulder rotation, such as baseball pitching and swimming, put a lot of stress on the rotator cuff muscles and can lead to injury.

One should seek medical attention for a rotator cuff injury if the pain lasts for more than a few days and if the pain prevents the person from performing simple activities. Oftentimes, people cannot stretch their arms upward or raise them out to the side. In more serious cases it is be impossible to move the shoulder at all.

To treat a frozen shoulder, be sure to rest the muscles and ice them at least three times a day. Later, heat may better bring relief and will keep the joint lose and help in mobility. Anti-inflammatory medications and injections are used to reduce pain. If a doctor determines that a serious tear is the cause of the frozen shoulder, surgery may be needed to repair the tear.
