Rheumatoid Arthritis & Gout
Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammation of joints that causes pain, swelling, stiffness, and loss of joint function. Gout is a type of tissue inflammation caused by a buildup of uric acid. These conditions should be treated with anti-inflammatory medication and pain pills. A balance should be struck between resting the affected area to reduce inflammation and exercising to keep the joints and tissues healthy and strong.
Rheumatoid arthritis and gout are classified as contraindications, which means they should not be massaged because it will only cause more damage to the injury and slow the healing process. Since these are inflammatory conditions, massaging the area increases blood, thereby causing additional swelling and pain.
